Chapter Thirteen

As she headed into November, Britt had to make adjustments to her daily schedule. She tried to fit in her walks on the beach every day, but the weather rarely cooperated. She would valiantly struggle through at least a few minutes, stumbling along the pebbly coast and fighting to remain upright in the stiff winds. She had decided she needed to add meditation to the multitude of new habits she was trying to cultivate, and she thought of her beach time as a form of walking meditation. When it was too stormy to bear, she stayed inside and did a seated meditation instead, peeking at the clock on her phone every thirty seconds and getting absolutely nothing out of the practice except an increase in her fidgetiness.

She was working through her grant applications, and the time spent studying the applicants’ topics had become the highlight of her days. She had two more research visits to do, and she was finding it challenging to choose among such worthy charities. They all needed her money and would do important work with it. She had been trying to find a way to prolong the process—both because she didn’t want it to end and because she couldn’t make up her mind—and Cathy had suggested hosting a cocktail party where she could chat with the top applicants in a more casual setting. Britt felt a little silly, like she was planning a reality show event, with her handing a red rose to the winning cause as the climax of the party, but she still had jumped at the idea. For all the right and honorable reasons, of course, and not just because she wanted to see Tess again. She had another week to make her final choice, and then the life decisions she had been avoiding would come front and center again, so she was going to make the most of it.

Britt got in her car and sat with the wipers blasting on full power, considering her options. She was already drenched, so a walk on the beach couldn’t do more damage to her clothes and hair, but she could barely see three feet in front of her. The diner was a dry option, but she had already eaten lunch at Betty’s restaurant in Neah Bay since she couldn’t face another grilled cheese sandwich today, and Betty’s iceberg lettuce and grated carrot salad had been a slight improvement. But she’d go stir crazy if she had to spend all afternoon inside her cabin.

She briefly thought about driving to Forks and cruising the streets, hoping for a sign of Tess. She could imagine what she would say if she did happen to find her. Tess! What a surprise. I just happened to be prowling through the residential neighborhoods in Forks today. Wanna have sex? She wasn’t quite desperate enough for that. Yet.

She had one other choice, and she decided to take it even though it might cost her. She put her car in gear and drove past the general store to a small specialty shop she had seen when she first arrived.
